Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos has named Oakland County Clerk Ruth Johnson to be his running mate for the fall election.
She was among 15 current and former Republican women state representatives and senators in the audience this morning when DeVos made the announcement in Lansing.
DeVos said he was impressed by Johnson as a person and by her experience in goverment at state, county and local levels. Johnson is a former state representative and Oakland County commissioner. She was accompanied at Monday's announcement by her 7-year-old daugher Emily.
The announcement comes two weeks before the Michigan Republican Party’s convention Aug. 25-26, where DeVos will be officially pronounced the GOP candidate for governor.
It was widely speculated that DeVos, a businessman from Ada near Grand Rapids, might choose a female from southeast Michigan to balance his ticket.
Johnson was most often mentioned as a possible choice, though not by the DeVos campaign, which had not floated any names publicly.
On the Democratic side, Lt. Gov. John Cherry will continue as running mate for Gov. Jennifer Granholm
