It's A New Day In Educational Choice by Akindele Akinyemi

It's a wonderful day to celebrate. The reason? DPS just lost 25,000 students and WILL (not could) lose up to $190 million dollars in state aid. This could result in massive layoffs and children going to other school districts.

I have been a serious crusader for educational choice and it seems now we can discuss FULL options from here on in. I have been saying all along that government schools do not work. It is based on a 18th-19th century model.

Our students are not just going to charter schools but they are crossing 8 Mile, Telegraph and Michigan Ave to go to school. Some of our stduents have just dropped out completely. Others have moved out with their families outstate.

DPS will NEVER come to the 21st century and I am urging those teachers and administrators to begin to look at ways to regionalize the school district (by merging it with Wayne RESA), abolish the school board OR start building management companies within the school district framework. A simple board of directors is all a school needs right now, not the larger school system.

That's sick that you would celebrate the loss of jobs and schools and livelihoods within the city. Only a fool would celebrate something like that. What makes you think that merging with RESA will be the so-called solution??? School districts within RESA are also closing schools and making layoffs. But you continue to bash DPS you are a typical republican flip flopper.

I'm celebrating because these teacher unions are just like Iran...they would love to see the destruction of educational choices for children and parents. The chickens are coming home to roost. The only fools were those who were striking KNOWING that count day was coming up!!!!

Simple. Since school districts ARE already regionalized through their "schools of choice" system where students from Detroit can go ANYWHERE in Wayne County we might as well take it to the next step. It would be a whole lot better than trying to fix something that will never be fixed.

Yes, and those schools that close should be opened back upa s charters.

You will never catch me slipping, flip flopping or saying anything different on education. What I said yesterday is what I said today and what I will continue to say tomorrow.
