Benton Harbor - Whirlpool plans to cut about 1200 U.S. jobs in the next two years, moving some to Mexico.
The company says the cuts will be made at its plants in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and Evansville, Indiana, in 2007 and 2008.
Whirlpool will cut about 700 positions at its Fort Smith plant once it completes an expansion of its refrigeration manufacturing facility in Mexico. Some work was already transferred to Mexico when Whirlpool recently completed a voluntary layoff of approximately 940 workers at Fort Smith.
The company previously announced plans to add 1100 jobs in Ohio for expanded laundry manufacturing operations at two sites there.
