Leave Crack Children at the Door by Akindele Akinyemi
When crack cocaine was introduced over 20 years ago in the Black community we knew then it would have a devasating effect on the next generation.
Welcome to that generation today.
Crack children are going to school in record numbers in our community today. While school psychologists say that most of our children have ADHD and ODD I say they are most likely a result of a parent smoking that stuff.
We make excuses for our children's behavior. Especially crack children. They are impulsive and cannot control themselves in the classroom. They beat on everything and cannot stop talking consciously. When they work they are standing up all the time and cannot sit down. They bounce off walls and therefore have a hard time focusing in the classroom.
I have heard both sides of the argument in the political world. Liberals in Detroit feel that we should help crack children by enrolling them in government programs. Programs that will keep them dependent on the system.
Conservatives feel that spiritual enlightment FIRST will help the crack victim overcome their demons, then education, them programs.
My point on crack children in the schools? We should work on helping the children who have not been exposed to crack or any drugs. I have said before we waste too much time on at-risk children in the first place when we should be preparing students in the classrooms who want to go to college. These are the students that will help transform our community not trying to save crack babies and drug-addicted children and their drug addicted parents.
Many are called and few are chosen. The few children that will be chosen are the ones that will bring our community out of poverty and destruction.
