Urban Regional Power Leading The Fight For Innovation by Akindele Akinyemi

The purpose of lifting the cap off charter schools is to develop more specialized schools that will engage in direct competition with traditional schools within our urban regional powerbase without going through the redtape of big government breathing down our necks.

If Black Conservatives are going to become a force to be recognized with they must be able to articulate why the need for more educational choice. It does not matter what party affiliation your belong to if you are for educational choices then you need to help us build a One Network through educational options.

What I am trying to explain to our parents and students in our community is that the future of charters are here now. Technology is available NOW where students can watch a 3-D hologram of a volcano erupting right on your desktop.

Charters can lead the way in urban technology by having students physically located around the country meeting in a virtual classroom. The audio and visual environment is fully immersive. Students feel like they are in the same room.

Charters within the urban regional powerbase can lead the way by children exploring the prehistoric landscape in a simulated virtual world with the sights, sounds, smells, and sensations of actually being there.

Specialized schools can lead the way in rapid advancements in the years ahead could enable new learning environments using such things as simulation, visualization tools, virtual worlds, personal intelligent tutors, vast digital libraries and museums, learning and collaboration unbounded by geography.

Charter technologies that are coming could help students of all ages reach their potential by teaching individuals in the way they learn best and at their own pace. Students could have knowledge and training when and where we need them. Students will be able to learn faster and better. They'll reach much higher levels of achievement, and at a lower cost.

At the same time, exciting new jobs and new occupations would be created for education professionals. Making alternative teacher certification options available for those who are making a career change or going back to school to become certified will help close the gap in the teaching profession. We can do this if we are serious about change.

The most exciting point of all this? On-line schools are becoming more popular in both higher education and in K-12 education. That means we can no longer sleep on schools like the University of Phoenix and Grand Canyon University. We cannot sleep on online high schools like Lifeskills Centers. As technology advances so do we. Therefore, conservatives can lead the way on this very historic educational reform effort right here in the State of Michigan.
