Why Are Blacks Mad at Whites For Calling Us Niggers? by Akindele Akinyemi
I find it interesting about how many African Americans are still pissed off at Michael Richards and his tirade on stage calling Black people niggers.
I was not pissed at all. So what he called Black people niggers. Racist white people have been calling us niggers before slavery.
But the main reason why I was not pissed off because how many times do we call each other niggers or in the street form niggas? My students often tell me that it is OK to call each other niggas but not white people calling us niggas.
This is the highest form of slave mentality. And what's interesting is that while the Black Nationalist and civic rights community complain about racism from white people I have not heard anyone here complaining about the use of the word nigger in our schools, buses or even community centers.
This is what Michael Richards said...
During a November 17, 2006 performance at the Laugh Factory in West Hollywood, California Richards responded to a black heckler, by launching into a rage filled racial tirade. Richards lashed out, "Fifty years ago we'd have you upside-down with a fucking fork up your ass," in a reference to lynching. He then repeatedly yelled, "He's a nigger!" The heckler responded with his own racist statements, calling Richards a "fucking cracker-ass motherfucker", "fucking white boy", and "It's not funny. (Source: Wikipedia)
Two wrongs do not make a right and the media never focused on the Black people. Not to say that Richards statement was right to begin with but how long have we been calling each other niggers and niggas? The poverty pimps race baiting hustlers came out as usual to decry Mr. Richards but HAVE NOT lashed out against rap artists who continue to us the word nigga in their lyrics.
We now have a whole generation of youths that call themselves niggas and only a few organizations in the community are combating the situation. As many churches I have visited in the last several years only three have openly discussed and denounced the word nigger or nigga on the pulpit. So not only we are not talking about HIV/AIDS from the pulpit but we are not talking about the history of this word in context and in-depth.
Before we go out here and protest against Michael Richards we need to protest against our own and clean up the filth that comes from our mouths.
