Happy New Year? by Akindele Akinyemi

Former President Gerald R. Ford is dead at 93.

James Brown is dead at 73.

Saddam Hussein is dead at 69.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm was sworn in a second term on Monday.

Black people who voted for Granholm is still broke and cannot find a job.

Welcome to the New Year 2007.

Michigan still leads the nation in unemployment. Black people in Detroit are still paranoid about regionalization.

But charter schools have seen a boom in Metro Detroit in recent weeks. People are pulling their children out of Detroit Public Schools quick, fast and in a hurry.

The Democratic Party in Michigan controls the House. The Democrats control all of the educational system in Michigan presently. Remember, people in November voted against the war NOT for the Democrats. But people are about to see how much the Democratic Party loves Black people.

If the Michigan Democrats love Black people then why are they not on the same side as us when it comes to educational choices for our children? Why do they side with the unions to keep failing public schools running? Even Granholm herself would like to see educational choices WITHIN the failing public school system.

You tell me does that make any sense?

As we begin 2007, let us all make a clear cut effort to push for more educational choices for our children in Detroit by breaking the cap off charter schools.
