Tomorrow I have been invited to be on a panel sponsored by the National Association of Black Journalists. The flyer is below:
Yes, we will be talking about the use of the "N-Word" and Don Imus.
I do not have a problem discussing race in our community. But this issue should be discussed in the White community as well.
However, my major gripe about any form of communication in our community is the lack of presence when it comes to Black Conservatives or Black Republicans in the Black media. It's no wonder that many liberal grassroots activists think I am the only Black Republican in Detroit. Our voices are never heard because the false perception of Black Republicans is overwhelmed in the Black media.
Hey, I mean the Black press run out and get Dr. Ron Walters from the University of Maryland to bash Black Republicans talking about we will never have a chance to be elected in this country. The Black newspapers (Michigan Chronicle, Michigan Front Press, Michigan Citizen, and other Black newspapers in Detroit) rarely, if ever, show a Black conservative perspective of things. It's not just here but this biased reality is everywhere in the Black community in America.
During the gubernatorial elections I saw two Black Republicans openly support Dick DeVos for Governor. That was Andrew McLemore in the Michigan Chronicle and myself in the Michigan Front Page. I now for a fact that 5 other articles were submitted because 2 of them came from my students. Not one was ever published.
Why are Black Republicans silenced in Black media? We read the Mayor Kilpatrick's people writing columns, out-state people, White people writing articles in the Black press, church leaders and civil rights activists. Not one Black Republican in the Black press have a running column anywhere in Michigan.
Black Conservatives are not heard. I was even appalled to see how Ebony magazine picked one Black Republican (Condoleeza Rice) as part of their 150 Black influential leaders. One Black woman. Ebony, on the other hand, picked the entire Congressional Black Caucus as influential leaders. Since when have this caucus did ANYTHING for Black people? We vote for them only only because the color of their skin. Even John Conyers admitted on FILM that we do not read all of the bills. What type of accountability is that?
There are a number of Black Conservatives that are doing things locally and internationally. No press for them.
I hear how Blacks talk about Fox News as being a network for Republicans. Whatever. I turn on Black radio and all I hear is Black liberal talk shows, Black radio promoting the N-Word through hip hop and Black television shows interviewing Black liberals. This type of reinforcement helps the Democratic Party control the Black vote.
Where are the Black Liberal point and the Black Conservative counterpoint in the Black press? The White newspapers do this all the time. How come we cannot do the same? What are we afraid of? I have never opened up the Michigan Chronicle or Front Page to see a debate between a Black liberal and Black Conservative.
Presently, there are NO Black Republicans on TV discussing the issues. The last one was Tara Wall and she is with the RNC in D.C. There is ONE Black Conservative radio show and that is Joshua's Trail by Rev. Levon Yuille on Saturdays on 1400 AM. Outside of that the media is dominated by Black liberal thoughts.
That is a serious crisis. What is the fear behind this? How come the Black media in our community catering to a liberal mindset when we should have a balanced perspective? It is outrageous for my Black Liberal counterparts to complain about my so-called "not being balanced viewpoints" when they give the Black press a free pass. How many Black liberals call out the Black press on this?
A double standard that goes on in our community daily. The Black press do not highlight what Black Republicans are doing across the state, let alone the country. I wonder why?
You will never see a Black Republican or Black Conservative on TV except the FOX News Channel or a church leader paying for airtime on TBN or the Word Network.
It is ridiculous of how it is impossible for Black conservatives to get their voices heard in a predominately Black city. I have always wondered why groups like the NNPA censor Black Republican voices in their press. What is going on?
The White media are not just the ones suppressing the Black Conservatives on TV, radio or print media. The Black Press have been doing this for decades. And even though I am a member of Project 21 Black Conservatives should not even have to go through this avenue to get our voices heard from a Black press that we help build up decades ago.
The Black Republican magazine is published by our sister group The National Black Republican Association. Not one person wanted to sponsor the magazine to promote a fresh voice. Even though the Association has published two magazines (one each year) not one Black company will sponsor this magazine that actually educates people.
The Black press must stop the division of Black liberals and Black Conservatives. We do not need White folks to do damage to keep us separated because we do this to ourselves.
