Detroit: Separate and Unequal by Akindele Akinyemi
Before I begin to speak about why do our community need to increase urban education on marriage and family I would like to share my experience with you of what I witnessed today.
I was at the Eisenhower Foundation's forum this morning on Wayne State University's Law School Auditorium. The subject dealt with the Kerner's Commission.
According to Wikipedia:
The Kerner Commission was the popular name given to the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, chaired by Illinois governor Otto Kerner, Jr. It was also known as riot commission. The 11-member commission was created in July, 1967 by President Lyndon B. Johnson to investigate the causes of the 1967 race riots in the United States.
The commission's report, usually called the "Kerner Report," was released on February 29, 1968. Its finding was that the riots resulted from black frustration at lack of economic opportunity. Its best-known quote is: "Our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white—-separate and unequal." Its results showed that one main cause of urban violence was white racism. It called to create new jobs, construct new housing, and put a stop to de-facto segregation in order to wipe out the destructive ghetto environment.
According to the panelists (who were nothing but liberals) they stated how Detroit is still separate and unequal based on white racism. For instance, I find it very interesting how State Rep. George Cushingberry stated how white supremacist groups were on the rise in the suburbs but fail to talk about how black on black crime is on the rise in his district.
And what about the sister from the radical ACORN organization that said charter schools were the reason why Detroit Public Schools are failing.
53 core neighborhoods in Detroit with over 107,000 residents are primary poverty-stricken areas.
I got up and left after I heard Congressman John Conyers blame everyone but black people for the woes in our community. He talked about Jena 6 and nooses but failed to talk about how we lynch our own people in our own homes.
Allow me to tell you the REALITY of the situation.
Detroit is still separate and unequal after 40 years. But this time it has nothing to do with white racism or white flight. We, as black people, are leaving Detroit also.
We are not leaving because we do not love Detroit. We are sick and tired of the deterioration of the black family in our community. We are leaving because politicians lie about improving our public schools and nothing never happens. In fact, the Detroit Delegation of the House of Representatives helped passed a bill to increase funding for underachieving public schools. Why would they agree to do this when that money will never reach the classroom? Our legislators are duped into thinking that more money can improve education. That is the biggest lie liberals have ever promoted in the history of public education.
Detroit is moving in two directions but it is more than so-called white racism. We have always have black racism in our midst. Anyone familiar with the Boule, Jack and Jill or Detroit Girl Friends?
Most of these groups originally only allowed light skinned people (and families) into their organizations. Even though we know massa has been through everyone's bed chambers we STILL to this day discriminate against each other.
The other severe crisis that NO ONE on this panel discussed the rapid deterioration of the family. White racism does not make a black man irresponsible. White racism does not make a black man not go out and obtain an education. White racism does not make a black man gay, a sperm donor or abusive towards his spouse. It is interesting that liberals NEVER, EVER bring up family values when we are trying to improve the economic conditions of the black family. It is common sense that a married couple who understand finances will prosper than the single mother or single father who is struggling.
No one discussed how FAITH and SPIRITUALITY is KEY to revitalizing our community. We never include God or Jesus Christ in public policy because the powers that be claim that we have to keep religion and politics separate, yet, this country was founded on spiritual and faith-based principles.
Detroit is separate and unequal because of education. While one panelists showed how there are some disparates in reading and math between Detroit children and the statewide average he did not go into detail of why there were disparities.
First, when you have a population that is 50% functionally illiterate you are not in a position to save your children. Second, when we stop getting high and stop being irresponsible we will be in a position to save our children. Third, when we begin to ignore racism and accept competition in our academic settings we will begin to see improvement.
Detroit is separate and unequal because Black Power has failed in the city of Detroit. We struggled for black power during the 60s and 70s and began that movement with the late Mayor Coleman Young. YBI and the Chambers Brothers happened under Black Power and Coleman Young. The explosion of heroin and cocaine happen in the inner cities under Black Power.
Now Black Power under liberal policies have decimated Detroit and every other black city in Michigan.

Detroit is worse off today than when the White people first left. Everything we use in Detroit is imported. Even though we have been under Democratic control for 40 years we still blame Republicans for everything that happens in Detroit today. Our leaders are not men enough to accept responsibility for the abject poverty of our people. We accuse Republicans of plundering and pillaging the natural resources of Detroit.
Detroit will remain separate and unequal until blacks in this city stop screaming racism and stop blaming white people for our problems. Taking personal responsibility will be the key to revitalizing our community.
