Is God Real? by Akindele Akinyemi
I have a friend who asked a very important question. She asked me if Jesus Christ is so real when is he coming back and how come He has allowed the world as we know go to hell.
She pointed out the number of churches in the Black community. I know for a fact in the City of Detroit there are two poisons on every corner, church and a liquor store. She too pointed that out and if the Black community is so spiritual then why do we have so much chaos in our community?
I am a firm believer in God myself but sometimes we have to ask that question when things are bleak. There is a church on every corner and yet Detroit has the highest murder rate in the country. More people die here than New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. We have the highest STDs in the country. We have the highest foreclosures in this region. People cannot find or create jobs. Our children are trapped in failing schools and negative forces will not allow more options for our children to learn.
Less people in our community are getting married. Speaking of marriage, our people look at marriage as an alternative lifestyle while being single, bi-sexual, transgender, gay or lesbian is more normal in our community than ever before. No one wants to be committed to the opposite sex anymore. No one wants to date, no one wants to get to know one another anymore. The Bible says till death do us part but divorce is high as hell in our community.
We have churches on every corner in the hood but more evil is present in our community than ever before. We read the Bible, go through the motions in church and when we leave the Lord's House we go back to doing evil. We say Jesus but are we practicing Jesus? We say we believe in God but are we actually following His Word?
She asked this question of Jesus Christ because of the direction of the world in which we live in. She pointed out how many Christian denominations are there and they all say that they are right and the other is wrong. She has been looking into practicing Islam or Buddhism because she sees consistency in those faiths as compared to Christianity. She wants to be married, have children but cannot find the right mate in Christianity. She feels that she has hit a glass ceiling.
Quietly, I cannot blame her. At times I hit a glass ceiling myself when you are the only urban conservative blogger in Michigan out here trying to reach the masses of people with knowledge, wisdom and understanding. After almost 20 years of activism and evolution, I still ask God why are you taking me through the motions?
I ask that question when I see people in church speaking in tongues and listening to the sermon. Not because I do not believe but because it is getting much harder to survive out here. If I was sagging my pants, living a thug life and making money rapping. Our children are killing children, our families are broken. our community is in poverty and our educational level is at a all time low. It's like Blacks are living in pre-Reconstruction or something in this day and age. We ask God to make our community better but nothing changes. We say faith without works is dead and vice versa but everyone is so individualistic that is makes no sense.
