We are still talking about illegal immigration in this country. If you are a Republican you are torn because it pits one core GOP constituency (law-and-order conservatives) against another (business interests that rely on immigrant labor). One camp wants to tighten borders and deport people who are here illegally; the other seeks to bring illegal workers out of the shadows and acknowledge their growing economic importance.
My immediate concern is the growing number of people who call themselves conservatives that are starting to stereotype illegal immigrants. I have been told that within the Hispanic race that Mexicans are the lowest of the lowest. If that is really the case then how come they have Mexicantown here in Detroit? Mexicans built Mexicantown without the help of the federal government. They cannot be that dirty or foul to build economics first and use their political power on both sides of the political aisle.
However, because this is a Presidential year the Democrats look at illegal aliens as an easy way to pad their vote totals. Because Hispanics tend to vote for Democrats in disproportionate numbers, 10 million illegal immigrants could translate into a net gain of 2-3 million potential voters for the Democrats once they become US citizens.
Conservatives and moderats need to understand the backlash of illegal immigration without the negative stereotypes. I hear hardline conservatives talk about how Mexicans need to learn English. I feel that Whites and Blacks should learn other languages to help them compete on the global scale. Including Spanish and Arabic.
Once again, we are crying about immigration when everyone in this damn country is a descendant of an immigrant. If you are Black, you should have no problem with illegal immigration because we were brought here illegally against our will. Now, we, as Blacks, have turned our guns on other races as if we are priviliged here.
Nationally, many blacks are unabashed in fingering illegal immigrants, mostly Mexicans, even though many illegal immigrants are from Canada, Europe and Asia, for the poverty and job dislocation in black communities.
The anti-immigrant sentiment among blacks is not new. A century ago, immigration was also a hot button issue among black leaders. Marcus Garvey, Booker T. Washington, and W.E.B. DuBois railed against Eastern European immigrants that crowded Northern cities. They claimed the new immigrants elbowed blacks out of the bottom rung manufacturing jobs.
Blacks are hating on Mexicans and vice versa comes from the lack of knowledge. It is silly to sit here and kill each other over ignorance. The argument I often hear from Republicans is how Mexicans are taking jobs from Blacks. Blacks half the time do not want to work. If we did I would not have to wait 100 years in line for a happy meal at McDonalds, wait 20 minutes in line to check out at CVS, and have to wait 30 minutes at the credit union because our people keep taking off work to go shake our ass at the club or just simply want to watch TV instead of going to work. So that whole Mexicans taking jobs from Blacks is garbage.
Illegal immigration then and now is not the prime reason so many poor young blacks are on the streets, and why some turn to gangs, guns and drug dealing to get ahead. A shrinking economy, savage state and federal government cuts in and the elimination of job and skills training programs, failing public schools, a soaring black prison population, and employment discrimination are still the major reasons for the grim employment prospects and poverty in inner city black neighborhoods.
Here is the real fear from Blacks. We are afraid to teach our children the value of hard work. We know that Hispanics have surpassed Blacks as the new minority in this country. In due time, Hispanics, like Asians, Arabs, and Jews, will set up shop in the Black community and make money off of us. But we are crying about illegal immigration. If Blacks would stop preaching social power and practice economics the whole debate on illegal immigration would be mute in our community. But because Mexicans from across the border pose such a threat to our community because we are not prepared to deal with the reality that the hood is bigger than Detroit we have fallen back on how illegal immigration is a threat to national security.
The real threat to national security is education. Unacceptable education quality is a very real and serious threat facing our young generation and our nation. The poor level of education quality domestically and vs. foreign nations places our young at great risk. This seriously impacts the economic future of our youth, including their future living standards - as they face the most internationally and technologically competitive era in history. Education is the ultimate poverty eradication tool to bring our community back to its former glory. Many Black professionals, academics and blue-collar workers feel increasingly uneasy as they watch Hispanics flex their political muscle while assuming the mantle of a seminal Black struggle for justice.
You see Blacks are pissed off at Hispanics in our community because America has turned its attention to a newly energized Hispanic minority with growing political and economic clout. Notice I said economic clout. Not as consumers but producers. Even though so many thousands and thousands of them have no legal status and no right to vote right now, that day is coming when they will have that status.
But history has shown how Blacks and Hispanics have also been allies. In the 1960's, Dr. King and Cesar Chavez, the Mexican-American farm labor leader, corresponded with each other. And when Mr. Chavez was jailed, Dr. King's widow, Coretta Scott King, visited him in jail. In recent years, blacks and Hispanics have been influential partners in the Democratic Party.
Nearly 80 percent said immigrants from Latin American work very hard and have strong family values. But nearly twice as many blacks as whites said that they or a family member had lost a job, or not gotten a job, because an employer hired an immigrant worker. Blacks were also more likely than whites to feel that immigrants take jobs away from American citizens.
There is competition between immigrants and low-skilled black men for jobs. In 2004, 72 percent of black male high school dropouts in their 20's were jobless, compared with 34 percent of white and 19 percent of Hispanic dropouts.
Now I am not for illegal immigration because if African people from the continent cannot come over illegally why should people crossing over into Arizona and Canada? They have to come over legally. I also feel that immigrants should have a working knowledge of American culture (to an extent because this culture is corrupt).
But to simply stereotype Hispanics, Arabs and other races in this country because of the their values and culture is simply stupid on part of those conservatives who are desperate to win their conservative base. If we are serious about illegal immigration then let us stick to those policies and help immigrants understand that you cannot just walk in this country and start living without filing the proper paperwork.
